Cob

Cob is a mixture of mud and straw. Handfulls of the wet mixture are stacked in place to form walls. It is also known as Monolithic Adobe. Cob is used both as the entire wall or as a fill between other building materials.

I hope to apply Cob-like plasters for our Middle Caicos home. I've been told there is clay bearing soils somewhere on the island. Where clay is not available, other natural materials can be used as a binder. Two that should be available on Middle Caicos are cactus and manure (donkeys run wild on East Caicos). I may be able to substitute palm for the straw which gives Cob a fibrous reinforcement.

At CNBW, the kids had a fun time mixing cob in the cob pit.
This Cob structure is a bus stop shelter built during the 1996 Colorado Natural Building Workshop.
The inside of the bus shelter is decorated with hand sculpted relief images and painted with natural finishes. These bright colors are not paint.
